Adoption
Application

Adoption is not the end, but the beginning.

Adopters, like dogs, come in all shapes and sizes. Some are single and live in a studio in NYC; others have large families and big fenced in property. Some have owned dogs their whole lives, others are novices. What we look for in adopters though, is one thing: commitment. We see pet guardianship as a lifelong trust. There is a life dependent on you, and it’s a responsibility unlike any other.

How to commit?

Realistic expectations: Get the dog that fits your life. You’re not going to change, don’t expect the dog to. You’re a couch potato, get a low energy dog. Have kids, consider what temperament is best. Think before you leap. It’s a big decision, not an impulse.

Patience: A shelter dog needs time, to adjust, to settle in, to feel safe. They’ve been traumatized. Even the most housetrained senior dog might have accidents, or chew something up out of stress. Be patient.

Exercise: Nothing balances a dog more than exercise. Walk, run, go to the doggie park. Moving forward is how a dog propels their body, their thinking. An exhausted dog is a happy dog.

Training: Obedience training is essential, whether individual lessons or a group at Petco, just do it.

Nutrition: Dogs, like people, can become irritable, hyper, depressed if fed the wrong diet. There’s great dog food out there, and horrible. Do your research, because it does make a difference.

Leadership: Dogs need to know their place in the pack. It’s their nature. If they don’t have that, they’re confused and stressed, and unwanted behaviors appear. Leadership is key, and comes through positive training and consistency.

Rebound Hounds screens applications, checks references, does home visits, then follow up, and accepts a donation. What we're really looking for though, is that
COMMITMENT. If you’re really ready to take it on with your heart, spirit, and intellect, you can be a great guardian to a deserving shelter animal. And we guarantee it’ll be the best thing you ever did.

APPLICATION FOR DOG ADOPTION

Not every person who desires to adopt a dog should do so. It is our policy to make certain that each person who adopts a dog is aware of the responsibilities of pet ownership and is capable of and willing to accept those responsibilities morally, physically, and financially. By completing this questionnaire, you will aid us in determining if you and your family are indeed ready to become responsible pet owners. Should you agree that adopting a pet is a commitment throughout the lifetime of your companion animal, please fill out this questionnaire. You can also download the application and return completed forms to reboundapplications@gmail.com
